Bundesliga side Werder Bremen have completed the signing of Derby County defender Lee Buchanan.

Defender Signs Long-Term Deal

The 21-year-old left-back joins the German outfit on a four-year deal until 2026. A compensation fee is yet to be agreed between the two clubs.

Buchanan makes the move to Bremen following the Rams’ relegation to League One and a series of issues off-the-pitch as they battled against financial problems. It comes after Buchanan flew out to Austria to join his new teammates on a training camp on Sunday morning.

Last Word on Football understands Buchanan did not force a move away from Pride Park, but agreed the transfer to Germany would allow him to concentrate on his abilities on the pitch rather than matters off it.

Bremen have fought off plenty of interest to sign Buchanan, who had recruitment teams at various clubs across England and Europe interested in him recently. Coventry City and Stoke City have both been keen over the past few months, whilst Nottingham Forest had multiple bids for him rejected last summer and in January.

Since breaking into the first team at the East Midlands club, the 21-year-old has made 75 appearances while cementing himself into Wayne Rooney’s first team last season as they were relegated to League One.

Derby County were recently bought by Derbyshire property group Clowes Developments. It brings an end to almost a year of struggles through administration and transfer embargoes.

The Rams remain without a manager after Wayne Rooney’s surprise departure last month; they have been quick to complete three signings since emerging from administration, however, signing forward Tom Barkhuizen, goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith and winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing.
