Ajax’s pursuit of Steven Bergwijn is accelerating, according to Fabrizio Romano. The club are in direct talks to sign the 24-year-old, with Tottenham Hotspur being open to selling him.

Steven Bergwijn to Ajax?

The Transfer Saga Continues

For a while, it seemed Steven Bergwijn would join Ajax back in January. However, the deal never happened as the price tag of €25 million was too high for Ajax’s taste then, and Antonio Conte preferred to keep the Dutchman.

But now the Dutch powerhouse is trying to get a hold of Bergwijn again, even being ready to break their transfer record, eclipsing the €22.5 million the Amsterdam club paid for Sébastien Haller in 2021.

A Young Career

Steven Bergwijn started his youth career with Ajax, departing to rivals PSV Eindhoven a couple of years later. Bergwijn spent most of his first three professional seasons with PSV’s reserve team in the second-highest tier of Dutch football but did also get some playing time with the senior team in the Eredivisie, scoring his first top-flight goal in 2016.

From the 2017/18 season onward, he exclusively played in the Eredivisie (and the domestic cups), at least until leaving for Tottenham in 2020, the same year he scored his first goal for the senior national team.

Bergwijn’s stint at the London club so far has been a bit underwhelming, being quite plagued by inconsistency. But the Dutchman can still be brilliant when he has a good day, like when he scored twice in added time to grant Spurs a staggering win against Leicester City.

Should the 24-year-old join Ajax, he will undoubtedly be able to experience greater success in that slightly less competitive environment. The conditions to do so are there at least.
