‘Going to Break Their Transfer Record’: Tottenham in Discussions With Champions League Semi-Finalists Over Winger

Steven Bergwijn

According to Mike Verweij, Tottenham Hotspur are in discussions with Ajax over winger Steven Bergwijn, with the Dutch giants ready to break their transfer record in order to make the deal happen.

Spurs and Ajax met in the Champions League semi-finals during the 2018/19 season, with the North London side famously overturning a three-goal deficit to secure their place in the final against Liverpool. This time, though, they are on the same side, trying to agree on a deal that will work for both parties, with Tottenham needing to raise funds after an active start to the transfer window and Ajax looking to acquire a player already proven in the Eredivisie.

Spurs Have Been Busy This Summer

After Antonio Conte came to the decision that he would stay at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium for next season, Spurs have been very busy in the transfer market. Daniel Levy has pumped some cash into the club and so far it has not let them down.

Conte’s side have completed three deals already this summer, welcoming Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, and Yves Bissouma to the English capital.

Perisic’s contract with Inter Milan expired this summer, and while the Italian giants wanted to keep him, his former boss had other ideas. Conte previously worked with the Croatian at the San Siro, and so when the opportunity arose to sign an experienced World Cup finalist who is still near the top of his game despite being 33 years of age, he took it.

Another good addition, Bissouma joined Spurs for a ridiculously cheap fee compared to his ability. With just one year left on his deal at Brighton and Hove Albion, the midfielder was snapped up by Spurs for just £25 Million.
