Manchester United Looking to Offload Striker to Raise Funds

Manchester United

According to reporter James Ducker, Manchester United are looking to sell Anthony Martial in order to raise funds for other deals, specifically the cost of a new striker. The 26-year-old may not command a massive fee but with Frenkie de Jong likely to cost a pretty penny, the Red Devils will need every bit of money they can to continue reinventing the squad.

A Once Bright Spark

Once upon a time, Martial was seen as one of the brightest prospects in Manchester. After making the move from AS Monaco to Manchester United, he was seen as a potential long-term striking option.

The French striker fulfilled his end of the bargain early on, scoring 17 goals in his first season with the club, 11 of which came in the Premier League. The next season his contributions dipped to just eight goals in all competitions.

Martial had a slight resurgence in the following years, grabbing 11 goals in the 2017/18 campaign, and 12 in 2018/19 before having a stellar return to form in 2019/20 by netting 23 goals for the Red Devils. This would be the last time Martial hit double digits in goalscoring in a season.

Flame Burned Out

The 26-year-old followed up his 23-goal campaign with a meagre seven goals the following year. In what could end up being his final season in a red shirt, Martial was shipped off to Sevilla on loan after only scoring once in 11 games.

This loan to Sevilla was seen as one last chance for the former prospect to regain his finest form and show incoming manager Erik ten Hag that he deserved a space in his squad. The Frenchman only managed one goal in his 12 appearances for Sevilla in an ultimately disappointing spell with the Spanish side.

The Sevilla failure appears to be the last straw for Manchester United who are now looking to offload the once-promising Martial in an attempt to pick up a new goalscorer.
