Liverpool veteran midfielder James Milner is set to stay at the club and sign a new contract, according to reports. The new deal is only short term and will keep Milner at the club until June 2023.

James Milner Signs Reduced Contract

Milner will still be a Red but on a reduced wage. This is per Oliver Kay of the Athletic who also says the midfielder has turned down multiple deals including a move to the MLS.

It is unknown just how reduced this wage might be but it has been described as a ‘significant’ cut. At 36 years of age Milner is certainly creeping towards his twilight years as a footballer. Yet he still has a lot to give to Liverpool, featuring in 39 matches last year for the Reds.

Milner is already booking himself in the Premier League hall of fame having racked up 588 appearances for five clubs including Leeds United, Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Manchester City and finally, Liverpool. And despite the ‘boring James Milner’ archetype that gets spread all over social media, the midfielder still has 55 goals and 86 assists to his name. Not bad for a player who gets through a lot of work up and down the pitch.

With a year’s extension on his contract, Milner may have one last chance to win some more trophies with Liverpool. He has already won three Premier League titles, along with multiple FA Cups, Super Cups, Club World Cups and even the Champions League. A truly magnificent record.

Jurgen Klopp knows that a player of Milner’s experience and versatility is definitely worth keeping at the club for a bit longer. Yes he might be ‘getting on’ but Milner is a reliable player who can use his influence on and off the pitch.
