Aston Villa Transfer News: Steven Gerrard Chases in Former Newcastle United Target

Aston Villa transfer news

With the Premier League season now having concluded, attentions turn immediately to the transfer window. Whilst it is yet to open, rumours and agreements are flying around. Aston Villa have already landed the signature of highly touted French youngster Boubacar Kamara following his contract expiring with Marseille. Their business is far from done and Sevilla’s Diego Carlos is reportedly the next name in the Aston Villa transfer news, as per David Ornstein.

Aston Villa Transfer News: Villains Target Scintillating Sevilla Defender Diego Carlos

Where Would Diego Carlos Fit in at Villa Park?

It was a below-par season for Aston Villa under both Dean Smith and then Steven Gerrard. There has been an ever-growing concern about the place of Tyrone Mings in both the Villa set-up and that of Gareth Southgate with the Three Lions too. Centre-back has proved to be a position of worry for Gerrard, as is evident in their transfer business.

Diego Carlos has formed a rock-solid partnership at the back for Sevilla alongside Jules Kounde. The pair have been at the heart of the recent success out of the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. That being said, Julien Lopetegui will not be the manager at the start of next season and so there could be an overhaul due. Kounde has been heavily linked with Chelsea over the past 12 months and Carlos has other English teams besides Aston Villa interested.

Mings is the weak link when it comes to him and Ezri Konsa as the starting centre-halves. Him being left-footed has often got him by so the links to Diego Carlos, who is also left-footed, make a lot of sense. At 29, he maybe is a slightly older age profile than the Aston Villa hierarchy would desire. He has an exemplary injury record though which is always a bonus.

Who Else is on the Aston Villa Radar?

As previously mentioned, Aston Villa fended off some big hitters in securing a contract for Boubacar Kamara. On top of this, they locked superstar Philippe Coutinho down to a permanent deal after a successful loan from Barcelona to the Midlands.

Another defender who has been mentioned alongside Aston Villa is Calvin Bassey. The Rangers man was a relative unknown outside of Scotland until he played well beyond his years in their run to the Europa League final. He may have a small sample size of success behind him but it would be a calculated risk for the Villains, particularly if this move was made alongside one for Carlos.

Diego Carlos seemed very likely to become a Newcastle United player at some point but Aston Villa have joined the race now. It is clear that the club are after a centre-back and so one that has played at the top level and is left-footed makes a lot of sense.
