How Huddersfield Town’s Relationship With Chelsea Is Helping All

Huddersfield Town Chelsea

Huddersfield Town have a great relationship with top Premier League clubs. The Terriers may not currently be in the Premier League, but they already have an established relationship with the top clubs.

Huddersfield Town Help Develop Young Players

Huddersfield Town Trusted by Chelsea and Others

The Terriers have developed a reputation as being a safe place to send young talent to in order to aid their growth as a player. Chelsea, especially, have no qualms in sending players to the West Yorkshire Club.

Chelsea currently have two players honing their craft at the Championship club. Levi Colwill  (centre back) & Tino Anjorin (midfielder). Colwill joined the Terriers in June 2021, purely based on the fact that Huddersfield acted quickly.

Other clubs were keen on the defender, but the Championship side made a strong pitch to both Chelsea academy director Neil Bath and loan technical coach Carlo Cudicini. The Terriers went in before pre-season and explained how they could develop Colwill.

The centre back has made 28 appearances and scored twice in his loan spell with the Terriers. Although, the youngster would have liked more starting opportunities, Huddersfield have looked after him.

Speaking to The Athletic, Colwill – who is contracted to Chelsea until 2025 – said: “It’s been tough for my body physically. Championship football, first team football is so much different from academy football”

Anjorin is different, again from the Chelsea academy. This loan was slightly different. Anjorin was actually injured when the Terriers signed him on loan.

Part of the agreement was that he would stay with Chelsea to recover from the broken metatarsal he sustained in November. It took time for Anjorin to regain fitness and integrate into the Terriers squad. However, since then the midfielder has started to show his talent.

Anjorin scored the penalty that secured a win against Coventry to secure a top-four finish for Huddersfield. Up to that point, there had not been much to see from the Chelsea loanee. However, the confidence that Anjorin took the penalty, was like it was just a training session. Anjorin will be vital, if fit, for the Terriers’ last game, and the playoffs as they aim once again to get to the Premier League.

Huddersfield Town Relationship With Chelsea Thriving

Chelsea knew that Huddersfield would look after Colwill, and would keep their promise of bringing the centre-back on. The clubs have history together in the loan market. Kasey Palmer was loaned from Chelsea to the Terriers in 2016, and was part of the promotion winning side as the Terriers unexpectedly found themselves in the Premier League.

Trevoh Chalobah signed for Chelsea in 2018 at the age of 19. The defensive midfielder, who also plays centre back, joined Huddersfield in August 2019 for a season long loan. Chalobah made 36 appearances and scored once during the season. However, interest was sparked in the youngster. The following season the Chelsea player went on loan to Lorient in Ligue 1, the French top flight. During his time there Chalobah made 29 appearances and scored twice. He now finds himself a regular in the Chelsea first team.

It’s not just Chelsea that have trusted the Terriers with players. Ben Chilwell was loaned to Huddersfield from Leicester in the 2015-2016 season, before ironically signing for Chelsea in 2020. Chilwell has been a regular in the England International side since 2018.

Aaron Mooy came to the Terriers on loan in their promotion season from Manchester City. Mooy was instrumental to Huddersfield and played 45 matches. Although he only scored four times, Mooy was a favourite with the fans and the midfielder actually signed for the Terriers after their promotion to the Premier League.

Emile Smith-Rowe came on loan from Arsenal and although it was only a short spell, again the young winger quickly made an impression. Only 19 appearances and 2 goals, but importantly, goals that helped keep the Terriers in the Championship. Smith-Rowe needed confidence and developing when he arrived in West Yorkshire, he has gone on to be a shining light in the Gunners side. Scoring 10 goals in the season, even with an injury that sidelined him for a period of time.

So, if you are a looking for a good club to develop your young future talents, look no further than Huddersfield Town. The Terriers look after their players, and may, just may reach the Premier League again next season.
