Aston Villa Determined to Bring in £60 Million Midfielder this Summer

Aston Villa

Aston Villa were one of the busiest clubs during the January transfer window, bringing in players such as Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne. Since taking over the club in November 2021, Steven Gerrard has been heavily backed by the owners. The former Liverpool midfielder has now prioritised signing a holding midfielder this summer, with the midlands club now eyeing up an ambitious £60m move for Leeds United‘s Kalvin Phillips according to John Percy of the Telegraph.

Aston Villa Looking to Strengthen Their Midfield with Kalvin Phillips

Is Kalvin Phillips a Good Fit for Aston Villa?

Despite a busy January transfer window, Gerrard wasn’t able to sign a holding midfielder. His efforts to acquire Yves Bissouma fizzled out whilst another target, Rodrigo Bentancur, signed for Tottenham Hotspur instead. This means Gerrard will be looking to go all out to cover this position in the summer.

Kalvin Phillips was an essential part of Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds side but hasn’t had the same impact since Jesse Marsch replaced the Argentine boss. Phillips has been recovering from injury for a large part of the season and therefore hasn’t had the game time he would have liked to show his worth. A move to Villa Park could suit the player and gave him the crucial time on the pitch he needs ahead of the 2022 World Cup. It has been reported that contract talks between Leeds and the midfielder have come to a halt. Phillips could already have one foot out of the door.

Douglas Luiz May Have to Make Way for Kalvin Phillips

Douglas Luiz has been one of Gerrard’s preferred midfield options since he took over, making 18 appearances, but with Marvelous Nakamba returning from injury, and the potential addition of Kalvin Phillips in the middle of the park, it could become difficult for the Brazilian to get regular game time in a midfield three.

Luiz was on Arsenal’s radar during the January transfer window but a deal wasn’t finalised. A move to London could be ideal for the midfielder.
