Tanguy Ndombele Set for Lyon Return on Loan

Tanguy Ndombele Is Heading Back to Ligue 1 on a Bitter Note

As talks for Tanguy Ndombele’s Lyon return enter their final stages, he appears to be departing Spurs on a bitter note. His final appearance for the club came in their 3-1 FA Cup third-round win over Morecambe, however, the 25-year-old was substituted that game, and while slowly making his way off the field, Spurs home fans provided a less than positive reception for the player. The Frenchman then immediately headed for the tunnel. He has not featured for Antonio Conte’s side since, and Spurs have tried hard to offload him in the latter half of the January transfer window.

At this point, it appears as if the deal will be a loan with no obligation to buy. However, there is no denying that this saga is seemingly heading for a very bitter end for both parties; player and club.

Heaps of Potential Halted by a Stop-Start Spell in the Premier League

Signing for Spurs in the summer of 2019 for a record £54m, Tanguy Ndombele has had what could be described as a stop-start career in North London.

Scoring on his debut for the club in a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa in August 2019, there have been moments where he has shined. Last season he scored an off-balance chip against Sheffield United, impressing many and demonstrating his indubitable technical ability.

Being a Mauricio Pochettino signing, Jose Mourinho’s tenure did not start easily for Ndombele. Under the Portuguese manager, he was in and out of the squad, never managing to establish a permanent place in the starting 11.

Now under Antonio Conte, the end of the line appears to be in sight for Ndombele’s Spurs career. It will be hard to foresee him returning to North London in any capacity again.
