Villa Continuing to Build

Since last summer, Aston Villa have been one two keep an eye on in the transfer market. After waving goodbye to Jack Grealish, they welcomed Danny Ings and Leon Bailey on top of the already arrived Emi Buendia.

Now, just months later, and now under Steven Gerrard, they’ve just opened the door for former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho on loan. On paper, we are potentially looking at a squad capable of qualifying for Europe. Add Digne to the mix, too, and, all of a sudden, Gerrard has an increasingly promising squad on his hands.

Perhaps most importantly, Digne would solve a glaring weakness for the Midlands club. At left-back currently sits Matt Target, who isn’t a disastrous option by any means, but is, admittedly, shaky at times. Digne, with his attacking exploits undeniable, instantly improved the left-hand side at Aston Villa.

Of course, nothing is confirmed yet, but with Digne keen to leave and Everton keen to show him the door, the move certainly suits all parties. If the Frenchman does make the move, and goes onto be a success, he could be the difference maker.

Attracting names not many believed was possible a year ago, Aston Villa have undoubtedly gone up a level this season. And if that improvement continues, who knows where they’ll end up come the end of the Premier League season under Gerrard.
