Eddie Howe Looks to Reinforce Newcastle Squad Following Poor Form

After a torrid start to the season, Newcastle currently sit 19th in the Premier League. Their defensive record is woeful and they face the prospects of relegation. They are currently three points off safety and are set to spend money to make sure they survive.

Newcastle were purchased by the Saudi Arabian Public Fund (PIF) in early October. Following years of poor executive decisions and multiple relegations, Mike Ashley finally secured investors to take over the the Magpies. The transfer of ownership got fans excited due to the prospect of heavy investment, which is set to start in the January transfer window.

The ownership got the Geordie fans dreaming of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Kylian Mbappe, however the owners emphasised that this was a long term project and patience may be required.

Newcastle were given Brighton’s approval to speak with Dan Ashworth over a potential Director of Football job. Discussions have been occurring for just under a week and time will tell whether Ashworth is consulted over potential January signings.

Newcastle United Transfer News: January Shopping Expected

Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Newcastle were looking at multiple targets for the upcoming transfer window.

Romano stated: “Newcastle are planning to sign one or two centre backs in January. Dutch defender Sven Botman is still top of the list, waiting for an answer from Lille about final price tag.”

It was further reported that Botman was acquiring attention from various European clubs, including AC Milan, Sevilla, Wolves and Atalanta.

Sven Botman left Ajax to join Lille in July 2020, and won the French league in his first season. This was Lille’s first title in over 10 years and it was even more special due to PSG’s recent dominance in the league.

Newcastle Sets Sight On French-Duo & Ex-Tottenham Player

Newcastle are further looking to bring a new right-back to the club, with Kieran Trippier being linked to the north-east, as per ESPN. Trippier was previously linked to Manchester United, however, a deal never occurred due to Atletico Madrid’s demands.

French winger Ousmane Dembele is also linked to the club. But, a potential contract renewal is on the cards. The winger joined Barcelona for £135.5 million in 2017, and his Spanish adventure has been riddled with injuries that have never allowed him to find consistency. The club, who is already in financial array, could be set to lose Dembele on a free transfer this summer.

Newcastle United seriously need additions to their squad if they want to avoid the prospects of relegation. Keep an eye on the Magpies’ transfer activity this winter as it could be very interesting.

Due to the lack of investment in previous years, it is estimated that Newcastle can spend up to £200 million in the transfer window without breaking FFP rules. Time will tell whether they spend the full amount, half the amount, or even a quarter of the amount.
