Gimenez Staying With the La Liga Champions
Part of the La Liga winning side last season, Gimenez has been a solid part of the squad for a few seasons.
As part of the La Liga title-winning side, the defender is all but committed to potentially aiding Atletico to retain the title this season.
Making 151 league appearances for Atletico since 2013, he played 21 league games last season. The Uruguayan international has played the majority of his Atletico career as a centre-back. However, he has proven to be versatile, occasionally being deployed at right-back and as a defensive midfielder.
Conceding just 25 goals last season, the fewest of any team in La Liga, Gimenez is a proven commodity under manager Diego Simeone. The Atletico manager is no stranger to boasting solid defensive records. In recent seasons they have either conceded the fewest or join-fewest in the league.

Despite not being overly active during the window, this new contract will feel like a new signing for the club. A strong part of the title-winning team and long-term picture, there is a good chance Gimenez can contribute to another successful season for Atletico.
This weekend, the 2021/22 La Liga season begins. Atletico kick-off their campaign away to Celta Vigo on Sunday. They then play their first home game of the season, hosting Elche a week on Sunday. Simeone will hope his side will start strongly, by picking up where they left off last season.
