Barcelona’s Sergio Agüero Out Injured for Ten Weeks

Barcelona’s summer seems to be going from bad to worse. Following the departure of club captain Lionel Messi, the side now have new signing Sergio Agüero out injured. The news follows the club’s Joan Gamper Cup triumph over Juventus, where they won 3-0. Agüero missed the match due to picking up an injury in training and it is now clear that he has suffered an injury to his right calf and will be out for around ten weeks. As La Liga returns this weekend, Barcelona will enter the season without one of their key players.

Agüero Misses Last Game of Pre-Season

In the day that saw Lionel Messi announce his departure from the club, Agüero picked up a knock in training ahead of the team’s final pre-season match against Juventus at the Estadi Johan Cruyff. The extent of his injury is now clear and is more serious than first expected. During the game, Barcelona had another new signing step up and produce a stellar performance in the win, Memphis Depay. The Dutchman scored one and assisted another to ensure the 3-0 win. The pressure will be on Depay now more than ever to hit the ground running for his new side in the league following the injury to his fellow striker.

Agüero Out for Season Opener Against Real Sociedad

One of Ronald Koeman’s key signings this summer will be unavailable until mid-October at the earliest. With all that is going on behind the scenes at Barcelona, this is the last thing they needed. Now they face a tough Real Sociedad side in their first game of the season on August 15. This could change the club’s transfer plan to sell Martin Braithwaite in light of this injury to Agüero. In defence, Barcelona will hope that new signings Emerson and Eric García can both start the season well and improve the team. The Catalan team have also announced their four captains for the season: Sergio Busquets, Gerard Piqué, Sergi Roberto and Jordi Alba.
