Newcastle Transfer News: Magpies Targeting Ross Barkley and Hamza Choudhury

Ross Barkley

Newcastle United are looking to strengthen their midfield this summer during this transfer window, given the rumours currently circulating. Chris Waugh of The Athletic reports that Ross Barkley is considered a viable option if they are unsuccessful in their attempts to re-sign Joe Willock. Meanwhile, Scott Wilson of Northern Echo says Leicester City’s Hamza Choudhury could join on loan.

Newcastle Transfer News: Magpies Target Ross Barkley and Hamza Choudhury

Ross Barkley a Target if Willock Remains at Arsenal

Joe Willock’s Arsenal future still remains unclear. Steve Bruce wants Willock at his disposal again, which is unsurprising given his performances on loan last season. However, they will have to wait to see if Arsenal decide to give him an opportunity.

Willock was instrumental when he joined Newcastle on loan in January. He scored eight goals in 14 appearances and set the record as becoming the youngest player to score in seven consecutive matches.

Should Willock remain at Arsenal, Newcastle may look to target Chelsea’s Ross Barkley. The 33-time capped England international spent last season on loan at Aston Villa, although was largely uninspiring. The 27-year-old is unlikely to feature in Thomas Tuchel’s plans, who should have no qualms in letting Barkley leave on loan once again.

Hamza Choudhury Wants Loan Move Away From Leicester

Steve Bruce is also monitoring Leicester midfielder Hamza Choudhury. The 23-year-old is struggling for game time under Brendan Rodgers, starting just four times in the Premier League last term. It is understood that Choudhury is pushing for a temporary move away from the King Power Stadium as he bids to receive more playing time.

Leicester recently signed Boubakary Soumare from Lille, adding to their growing collection of central midfielders. Following this, it is becoming increasingly obvious that Choudhury doesn’t feature in Rodger’s immediate plans. A loan move is just what he needs to prove his worth, and a player who has played in the Europa League surely would improve Newcastle’s side.
