Jorginho Will Remain at Chelsea

Vital Cog at Stamford Bridge

The midfielder, who was born in Brazil, joined Hellas Verona’s youth setup in 2007. He made his senior debut with Serie C2 side Sambonifacese in the 2010-11 season, before returning to Verona where he established himself in the then-Serie B side’s first team. Jorginho helped them to promotion in 2012/13 and continued his role as a regular starter in Serie A. He then moved to Napoli in January 2014.

Jorginho came into prominence at Napoli under Maurizio Sarri. He was part of the side that finished second in Serie A behind champions Juventus in 2016/17, and in 2018, he was set for a move to Manchester City, with a deal very close to being agreed. Chelsea, however, swooped in at the last minute. The London side wanted Maurizio Sarri as their new manager, and signed Jorginho as well for a fee of £50 million with an extra £7 million in potential add-ons.

Since his arrival, Jorginho has divided opinion among Chelsea fans. Some ardently support him, while others have called for his departure at various times. Despite their animosity, the midfielder has established himself as a vital member of the squad under three different managers. In 2020/21, he in fact finished as Chelsea’s top scorer in the Premier League. The first choice penalty-taker scored seven from the spot.

Euro finalist

Jorginho has similarly been crucial to Italy’s success at Euro 2020. He has been ever present as Italy have reached the final of Euro 2020, so much so that there were genuine shouts for the 29-year old to be awarded the 2021 Ballon d’Or.

Manager Thomas Tuchel sees Jorginho as indispensable, and Chelsea are likely to offer him a new contract soon. His current deal expires in 2023. The Italian midfielder’s agent, Joao Santos, had stoked the fire a few days ago, saying the player could potentially move back to Italy this summer. He has now set the record straight, however. Jorginho may or may not end up getting a Euro 2020 winners’ medal, but he will definitely stay at Chelsea for another season.
