Talks with the 31-year-old began early this year and they are seemingly coming to a positive end for all involved.

Signing in 2016, it took until late 2017 for Mccarthy to consistently cement a starting spot at St Mary’s. He has since made over 100 appearances for Southampton and will be hopeful of being Ralph Hasenhuttl’s number one for next season. But, he will once again battle it out with Fraser Forster during pre-season.

Speaking about his goalkeeping choices for the 2021/22 Premier League campaign , Hasenhuttl said: ““I’m not really a big fan of having a clear number one goalkeeper.

“I need to have a good goalkeeper in the goal and whether it is number one or number two, or however you call him, it’s not interesting to me.

“The good thing is that we have two good goalkeepers that we can trust and this is something of an advantage.” He added.

Key Takeaways From Last Season

McCarthy started the season in excellent form, keeping seven clean sheets in Southampton’s opening 16 games. However, Southampton’s turn in fortunes in 2021 led to Hasenhuttl rotating between Mccarthy and Forster.

McCarthy was also part of the Southampton team who for the second time in recent years were smashed for nine. However, it would be unfair to criticise him for that.

The Saints are reportedly closing in on a deal for highly-rated Brest left-back Romain Perraud. The 23-year-old has attracted the attention of a whole host of Premier League clubs, but it seems that Hasenhuttl’s side are in pole position.

Southampton are also monitoring Blackburn Rovers forward Adam Armstrong. The 24-year-old scored 28 Championship goals last season and is also being watched by several Premier League clubs.
