Everton in Talks to Sign Sergio Romero

Sergio Romero

Everton are in talks to sign Sergio Romero on a free transfer, according to Laurie Whitwell of the Athletic. They had attempted to sign him on loan last season but that was unsuccessful.

Evetton Could Sign Sergio Romero

Failed Attempt Last Summer

Last summer, Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti wanted competition for goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Dean Henderson returned to Manchester United from his loan spell at Sheffield United. His impressive performances led to many calling for him to become Manchester United’s new number one. The presence of Henderson and De Gea, who is contracted until 2023, demoted Sergio Romero to third choice.

Romero, an Argentina international, has been second choice in Manchester ever since he joined in 2015. He did not get his move away last summer, however. Instead, he stayed on as a third choice, warming the bench. Everton were close to striking a deal, but it fell through. Indeed, Manchester United’s treatment of Romero left a number of his teammates disappointed. He has been a popular figure in the dressing room throughout his stay.

Everton Could finally Get Sergio Romero

As the Romero move failed, Everton looked on to other targets. They eventually signed Sweden international Robin Olsen on a season-long loan from Roma. Olsen did well when called upon, but there’s no guarantee if he’ll return to Goodison Park. Olsen, who is currently playing at the Euros, has two years left on his contract at Roma. Roma have a new manager in Jose Mourinho. Their goalkeeper situation is unresolved, with Pau Lopez possibly leaving and Rui Patricio a rumoured arrival.

Ancelotti departed this summer to return to Real Madrid. The chances of Robin Olsen returning to Everton are low, but he may not stay at Roma either.

Everton have singled out Sergio Romero as their goalkeeper target. Romero is a free agent, and might be persuaded to sign a short-term contract. Juventus and Celta Vigo are also interested in the Argentine. The 34-year old has 96 caps for Argentina, and has been one of the best number two goalkeepers in the Premier League. He has kept 39 clean sheets in 61 games for Manchester United, including in the 2017 Europa League final.

Signing Romero would be good business for Everton. A race is emerging for the experienced goalkeeper, however.
