Brighton & Hove Albion to Sign Forward Nicolás González in Record Deal

Nicolás González

In a club record deal worth up to £25 million, Brighton & Hove Albion are set to sign Stuttgart forward Nicolás González, according to Ed Aarons of the Guardian. The Argentine forward has reportedly opted for a move to the Premier League over one to the Serie A and Fiorentina.

Having failed to complete the transfer last summer, Graham Potter will be delighted if the move goes through. The Seagulls are crying out for a clinical forward. They’ve become known for their toothless nature in the frontline. The phrase ‘expected goals’ haunted the likes of Neal Maupay and fellow Brighton forwards last season.

They played football worthy of a top half finish yet just about survived the drop last season as a result of their failure in front of goal. Nicolás González will be desperate to put an end to their struggles.

A Transfer That Carries Risk

The summer transfer window can go one of two ways. Either you get it right and enjoy a season to remember or you sign players unproven at the top level and, in some cases, unheard of. Admittedly, those in English football often react with arrogance when that ‘unheard’ of player arrives. Most would rather see proven Premier League players, and perhaps understandably so, but what if that originally ominous player turns out to be Riyad Mahrez or N’Golo Kante?

At the same time, you may be running the risk of signing Ali Dia. It’s just a case of asking yourself whether the risk is worth taking. And, for Brighton, it is. Neal Maupay, signed from Brentford, has never hit the heights expected, so why not shop elsewhere?

Nicolás González scored six goals in 15 appearances last season in the Bundesliga. That’s just two less league goals than Maupay managed in 41 more appearances- making the risk one worth taking by Graham Potter.
