Fantasy Premier League Captaincy Selection Headache

Fantasy Premier League Captaincy: The Options

Harry Kane

  • Goals: 22
  • Assists: 13
  • FPL Points: 230
  • FPL points in the last five matches: 26
  • Price: £11.8
  • Opponents: Aston Villa (home)
Despite scoring on Sunday, Harry Kane would have been frustrated not to have scored more against Wolverhampton Wanderers. He hit the post once and forced Rui Patricio into a brilliant save. Kane and Mohamed Salah are now tied on 22 goals in the race to win the Golden Boot this season.
Meanwhile, opponents Aston Villa have not performed well defensively recently with just one clean sheet in ten matches. The fitness of key defender Tyrone Mings is also in question. So, Kane has a good chance to add to his tally of 22 goals this Wednesday. His record is good against Villa as well with seven goals in eight matches against them.

Mohamed Salah

  • Goals: 22
  • Assists: 5
  • FPL Points: 222
  • FPL points in the last five matches: 33
  • Price: £12.8
  • Opponents: Burnley (away)

With three goals in the last five matches, Mohamed Salah is keeping Liverpool alive in the race to finish in the top four positions this season. The Egyptian is also fighting to win the golden boot. So selecting Salah as captain would be a good option.

Burnley got a hammering against Leeds United on Saturday. However, they are traditionally a tough side to play against and with fans back at the ground, the Clarets are likely to give Liverpool a hard time at Turf Moor. The fitness of Nick Pope is a very important thing to consider as well.

Bruno Fernandes

  • Goals: 18
  • Assists: 13
  • FPL Points: 240
  • FPL points in the last five matches: 24
  • Price: £11.4
  • Opponents: Fulham (home)
Bruno Fernandes did well in Triple Gameweek 35 with 19 points. In fact, he even scored from open play. With the fans returning to Old Trafford, he should be fired up to perform against already-relegated Fulham. The Cottagers have nothing left to play for and looked really disjointed against Southampton. In recent weeks, Fulham have given away a lot of big chances and goals. A comfortable home win is likely and Fernandes should get a decent score. He is the best choice for the armband this week.

It is easy to make a case for each of the three players mentioned above. Kane and Salah going for the Golden Boot and being a bit selfish in their play could make one go for either of them. Their teams are fighting for spots in next season’s European competitions as well.
On the other hand, Fernandes will play without any pressure and Manchester United will want to put on a show in front of the fans against a deflated team like Fulham. It is a very tight call but the quality of the opposition sways the captaincy decision towards Fernandes slightly.
