Liverpool Are the ‘Main Club’ Interested in Raphael Varane

Liverpool have emerged as the ‘main club’ interested in Real Madrid and France centre-back Raphael Varane, according to Mundo Deportivo, via the Liverpool Echo.

The acquisition of the World Cup winner would not be cheap, but given the club’s defensive situation this year, a central defender of Varane’s quality,l would certainly be of interest.

Liverpool Emerge as ‘Main Club’ in Raphael Varane Pursuit

Raphael Varane Viewed as Virgil van Dijk’s ‘Perfect Match’

Regarded as two of the best defenders in modern-day football, a central defensive partnership of Raphael Varane and Virgil van Dijk would certainly excite Liverpool fans.

Mundo Deportivo’s report labels Varane as the ‘perfect match’ to van Dijk, a pairing that would be feared by the Premier League. The Reds have had to endure endless centre-back combinations since their trusted trio of van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, all suffered relatively long-term injuries during this season.

Both Jordan Henderson and Fabinho have been deployed as centre-backs in recent months, and whilst they have both displayed that they are competent enough to fill such a void, a fully fit Liverpool defence would boost the club massively.

Raphael Varane’s Real Madrid Future as Uncertain as Ever

The France international has less than 18 months on his current contract, with a summer move becoming an increasingly possible option. Varane’s representatives have already made contact with the current club regarding his contract situation, but the reported talks remain inconclusive.

A high number of elite-level clubs have shown interest in the past, but these teams will probably struggle to match his €85 million price tag, especially because of the financial difficulties generated from the ongoing pandemic.

Varane remains an integral part of Real Madrid’s team this season and bar a single game, he has played every minute of this La Liga campaign, emphasising his importance during this time of uncertainty.
