Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho Has Refound Goalscoring Form in Second Half of Season

Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho has refound his goalscoring form in the second half of the 2020/21 Bundesliga season. After a difficult start to the campaign, the 20-year-old talent has been delivering consistent goals and assists since the restart. On Saturday, he delivered another strong performance with a goal and an assist for Dortmund in their 4-0 win over rivals Schalke.

Sancho Picking Up the Pace

Sancho began the 2020/21 Bundesliga season with a long goal drought. His first goal in the German top-flight came on matchday 14 when he scored a goal and registered an assist in a 2-0 win over Wolfsburg. Before his goal against Wolfsburg, Sancho had recorded just three assists and no goals in his first 13 Bundesliga appearances of the season. These numbers paled in comparison to what he was able to produce the season prior when he scored seven goals and registered seven assists in his first 14 appearances.

His goalscoring form has continued to improve after the goal against Wolfsburg on matchday 14. In the very next match, he produced another goal and assist in a massive victory over RB Leipzig. After the official halfway point of the Bundesliga season was reached after matchday 17, Sancho has picked up the pace even further. In his first five appearances of the second half of the campaign, Sancho has delivered three assists and three goals.

Matching Last Season’s Numbers Remains a Challenge for Dortmund Man

The goalscoring struggles Sancho faced in the first half of the season in the Bundesliga have presented the possibility that he will finish the domestic campaign with less than ten goals. He currently has five goals and eight assists in the top-flight. If he does finish with less than ten goals, it would be much lower than the 17 goals and 16 assists he produced in the 2019/20 season.

Despite not being able to currently match his previous season’s number, there’s still a chance for Sancho to make a difference for Dortmund. The club is chasing the top four places in the Bundesliga as they have found themselves outside the UEFA Champions League positions.

If Sancho continues to produce goals and assists consistently for the remainder of the second half of the season, then it will benefit both club and player. He will certainly be a key player for Dortmund as they look to qualify for Europe once more and there’s still the opportunity for him to make an impact on the final outcome of the 2020/21 campaign.
