Manchester United Youngster Tahith Chong Scores on Club Brugge Debut

Chong Club Brugge

Tahith Chong joined Club Brugge on loan just days ago as the January transfer window came to a close.

The Dutch winger terminated his spell at Bundesliga side Werder Bremen, with a lack of first-team minutes and no guarantee of more on offer.

Chong instantly joined Belgian league leaders Club Brugge and has already hit the ground running!

Tahith Chong an Instant Impact on Club Brugge Debut

Three Minutes In

It took just three minutes for Tahith Chong to make his mark in Belgium. Debuting v Olsa Brakel in the Belgian Cup, Chong provided an early assist for Hans Vanaken to open the scoring.

Chong had struggled to find his feet at Werder Bremen before this move and may have had his confidence knocked. Having signed a new deal at Manchester United before leaving on loan, all intentions seemed to point at the Bundesliga move being make or break for his future at Old Trafford. However, Werder’s patience wore thin and he was left with a decision to make. It already appears he made the right one.

Club Brugge Provide More Suitable Loan Move

Perhaps the move to Werder Bremen was a little hasty. After all, it was to be his first temporary move away from Manchester United and the step proved a little too steep.

Chong scored once and assisted twice throughout his stay in Germany, but never appeared to be getting a genuine look in. The club’s head of professional football and scouting, Clemens Fritz, had called for patience with Chong in December, something the winger seemed to have reacted positively to when assisting two goals in two consecutive games. Despite that progress, come January, Chong made his case and requested the termination of his stay at Werder.

In Club Brugge, he has joined a club sailing clear at the top of the league by 14 points, a factor that almost guarantees him regular football, and with that comes the platform to improve and gain confidence.

Realistically, Chong has needed this loan spell for some time and it was a great shame that the Bundesliga move did not work out. However, he has been quick to rectify the situation.

Strong Start for Chong

Chong added to his early assist, playing a key role in Club Brugge’s third goal – an own goal by Robin Nelis – which was the result of the Netherlands U21 international’s corner. Chong put the icing on the cake with a fine finish in the 68th minute, before being substituted in the 72nd minute.

The platform on offer in Brugge will provide Chong – who could not have had a better start – with the tools and confidence to develop his game.
