Rangers Winger Jordan Jones Set for Sunderland Move

Sunderland are set to complete the loan signing of winger Jordan Jones from Rangers. Jones is expected to have a medical on Friday.

Sunderland head coach Lee Johnson looks set to make his second signing of the January transfer window. Following the arrival of midfielder Carl Winchester earlier this month, Rangers winger Jordan Jones looks set to be the second new player to arrive at the Stadium of Light.

According to reports by Scott Burns of the Daily Record and Mark Donnelly of the Sunderland Echo, winger Jones is on the verge of joining the Black Cats on loan for the rest of the season. Jones is currently out of favour with the current Scottish Premiership leaders and is now set to have a medical on Wearside.

Lee Johnson Set to Make Transfer Breakthrough

Lee Johnson has stated since his arrival that he wants more options in the final third of the pitch. It now appears that late in the current transfer window, Johnson is about to get his wish. Northern Ireland international winger Jordan Jones looks set to arrive from Rangers on a six-month loan deal.

The reports suggest that should Jones pass his medical today, he could sign in time to feature in Saturday’s game at home to Gillingham.

Up to Three New Players Could Arrive at Sunderland

Earlier this week, head coach Johnson stated that he was targeting up to three new signings as he attempts to get his Sunderland team into automatic promotion contention. He said: “I am confident we will get at least one in, hopefully, two and ideally three.

“I think the more we move towards the twos and threes there will have to be movement. But we are on it and the boys are doing a great job behind the scenes, we have all been looking extensively into the type of personality and players we want to bring in.

“There has been some excellent names on the list, some fall away, some are still there and those are the ones we are trying to attack now.”

Who is Jordan Jones?

Northern Ireland international Jordan Jones began his career at Sunderland’s North-East rivals Middlesbrough. He failed to make a league appearance for Boro and was loaned out twice before securing a move north of the border to Kilmarnock. His impressive form there led to a move to Scottish giants Rangers in 2019. However, since his arrival at Ibrox, 26-year-old Jones has found it tough to hold down a first-team place. This has proved more difficult since he was handed a seven-game ban for breaching COVID protocols in November.

A tricky winger with a pinpoint cross, Jones is the type of player Lee Johnson has been searching for this month. His Sunderland team have struggled to breakdown opponents despite dominating possession.
