Rumours have been circulating of an approach from Wolverhampton Wanderers for Diego Costa in recent weeks, as per The Times. Costa is currently a free agent following the termination of his contract with Atletico Madrid by mutual consent and was thought to be under consideration by Wolves due to the injury lay-off of star striker Raul Jimenez.
Wolverhampton Wanderers Not in the Market for Costa
Costa yet to Find New Club
Fabrizio Romano has now dispelled the rumour of a Wolverhampton Wanderers move for 32-year-old Costa, stating that, in fact, the club have never made a proposal to the ex-Chelsea forward. It was thought that the move was one that could have made sense for all parties, with Costa a proven goal scorer in the Premier League and Jimenez of Wolverhampton Wanderers suffering an extended time on the sidelines recovering from a fractured skull.
Wolves only had one first-team striker heading into January, the 18-year-old Fabio Silva. Silva looks promising but his lack of experience means it is some burden to take on the responsibility of Jiminez’ goals. Since the January transfer window has opened, Wolves have activated the option to recall Italian striker Patrick Cutrone from his loan spell at Serie A club Fiorentina
Costa had fallen out of favour at Atletico Madrid, having only scored 19 goals in 81 appearances in his second spell at the club, and the arrival of Luis Suarez ultimately led to the decision to allow Costa to end his stay at the club early and look for a new club as a free agent.
It is unclear where the Spain international’s future lies but he could still be a coup for any club, having scored 52 goals in just 89 games during his time in England. Despite his free-agent status, it could still be an expensive deal to pull off for any future employers, with wages likely to be very high; money Wolverhampton Wanderers were seemingly unwilling to spend on Costa.
Wolves Still After Striker
Although they are said to be out of the running for Costa, Wolves are still very much in the market for a striker. Goals have been hard to come by for Wolves since Jiminez has been out injured and if they want to finish the season strong this will need to change.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Wolves are very keen on Real Sociedad striker Willian Jose. The 29-year-old Brazilian has three league goals in 13 games this season and 52 La Liga goals in 143 appearances since to his move to Sociedad in 2016. It is understood that any deal would be an initial loan, with the two clubs reportedly negotiating on the value of the buy option.
