DC United are in talks to sign Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil, according to Chris Wheatley of Football.London.

Unwanted at The Emirates

The German is not in Mikel Arteta’s plans at Arsenal and will be allowed to leave the club should a suitable offer be received.

Ozil has not featured for the Gunners so far this season after being left out of their 25-man Premier League squad. His last appearance for Arsenal came on March 7, 2020, a 1-0 win over West Ham United.

Ozil’s lack of game time has been one of several issues for the North London club over the past few years. His £300,000-a-week contract has been a bone of contention, while his work rate on the pitch has also been questioned.

The 32-year-old has failed to replicate the form from his early days at The Emirates Stadium. After joining from Real Madrid in 2013, Ozil reached his pinnacle in the 2016/17 season, scoring 12 goals and registering 14 assists in all competitions.

Offer From the MLS

As a result of his lack of game time, several clubs are now showing interest in the 32-year-old.

According to Football.London, it is DC United who is at the front of the queue. The MLS side has issued him with a package that includes brand extensions for both his M10 and ’39 Steps Coffee’ brand.

The offer to Ozil may be too difficult to turn down. At 32, the peak of his career is now behind him and he is unlikely to replicate the best form of his career. Furthermore, he is unlikely to be able to have the quality to continue playing in the Premier League.

Should he make the move, he would be following in the steps of Wayne Rooney in making the move to DC. The current Derby County manager enjoyed a two-year spell with the club, scoring 23 goals during that time.
