Burton Albion have confirmed that they have parted company with manager Jake Buxton.

The 35-year-old’s last game in charge was a 4-3 defeat at home to fellow strugglers Wigan Athletic.

Jake Buxton Leaves Burton Albion

Tough Spell

Buxton was appointed as player-manager of the Brewers following the departure of Nigel Clough. Clough, now with Mansfield Town, was in charge at the Pirelli Stadium for five years, leading the club to the Championship during his spell. However, financial implications saw the club and the former Derby County manager part ways on good terms.

As a result, Buxton was tasked with steering the club through financial difficulties, as well as a tough League One season. As perhaps expected, it did not go well for the 35-year-old.

Burton currently sit bottom of League One, having collected just two wins from their opening 21 games. Seven draws having kept them in touching distance of safety, as they are just six off Rochdale in 20th.

The warning signs were from the early stages of the season. Despite wins over Accrington Stanley in both the EFL Cup and league, they were struggling. A run of 11 games without a win saw them slump to the bottom of the table.

After that 4-2 win over Charlton Athletic, the Brewers went on a four-game undefeated run. However, that proved to be the end of their good fortune and hopes of a turnaround.

Buxton’s final two games saw Burton put into two poor defensive displays. They lost 5-1 to current division leaders Lincoln City, before suffering a 4-3 defeat at home to Wigan this evening.

It proved to the nail in the coffin. A short statement on the club’s Twitter account said: “Burton Albion can confirm manager Jake Buxton is to leave the club.

“We would like to thank Jake for his hard work throughout his time at the club. More to follow.”

Burton are next in action at home to Oxford United on January 2.
