Manchester United centre-back

Manchester United are set to prioritise a new centre-back as their new signing, and this could be brought forward to the January transfer window according to James Ducker of The Daily Telegraph.

However, Bayern Munich defender David Alaba is reportedly not one of their targets.

Adding Quality

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to add quality to his defence. Harry Maguire is likely to keep his place in the side, while the Norwegian looks to add more quality to his side.

As a result, United have identified several targets. The Red Devils had been linked with Alaba, according to Marco Ruiz of AS; however, the Austrian defender is not a player they are interested in signing.

The Munich talisman is out of contract at the end of the season and is attracting interest from several of Europe’s best clubs. Having started his career as a left-back, Alaba has been converted to a central defender in recent years. He has made 18 appearances in all competitions so far this season, as Bayern sit top of the Bundesliga at Christmas.

Furthermore, United may wait until the summer transfer window to sign a new centre-back as the COVID-19 financial restrictions become clearer.

Mason Greenwood in Line for New Deal

The Red Devils are also set to offer a new contract to teenage striker Mason Greenwood, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Despite not featuring as regularly this season, the 19-year-old is still highly regarded by those at Old Trafford.

Greenwood has been kept away from the spotlight for much of the season after breaking Coronavirus restrictions with Iceland in England. He has made 16 appearances, scoring just three goals.

United will be hoping that a new contract can allow the youngster to rediscover his form of last season. Greenwood registered 17 goals in all competitions for the Red Devils in his debut campaign.
