REPORT: Papu Gomez Set to Leave Atalanta in January

Gomez Atalanta

Following an incredible season, in which he was involved in 26 goals, according to Fabrizio Romano, Papu Gomez is set to leave Atalanta in January after falling out with manager Gian Piero Gasperini at halftime in the Champions League game against Midtjylland.

If reports are to be believed, Atalanta are set to be dealt the biggest of blows. Not only is Gomez a key figure when it comes to goals, but he is also the team captain.

Losing one of your best players is difficult enough, but, to losing your captain at the same time can lead to devastating consequences.

Gomez Exit Could be Season-Defining for Atalanta

Transfers can make or break a team’s season- whether it is outgoings or the welcoming of fresh faces. And, if Gomez does leave in January, it will be a season-defining moment for Atalanta.

The Italian club currently sit as low as 8th in the Serie A having endured an unexpected season of struggle thus far. Papu Gomez, however, in contrast to how the standings read, has not failed to replicate last season’s form- scoring five goals and assisting a further four.

With Atalanta’s confirmed Champions League Round of 16 tie against Real Madrid set to take place in February, though, the Italians could be without one of their main men in Gomez.

Now or Never for Gomez

At the age of 32, many will be right to assume that Gomez’s career on the biggest stage is nearing its end.

One final challenge awaits, however, for the current Atalanta captain who could seal one final move to another top league- whether that be the Premier League, Bundesliga or, indeed, the Serie A.

Many clubs around Europe will undoubtedly be on high alert as we approach the January transfer window.
