Speaking to the club website, Boro boss Neil Warnock expressed his delight at the signing – but warned that Watmore had work to do to warrant a longer contract:

“I’m ever so pleased we’ve been able to get him on board.

“He’s done very well in training and he’s a smashing lad. He fits in really well in the dressing and I’m hoping that he can give us a bit of something different.

“It’s only a short-term contract and it’s up to him to show us that he deserves a longer one.”

Watmore’s departure from Sunderland saw the club release its longest-serving player, with the winger having spent seven years at the club.

Since then, Watmore has been spending his time to focus on his academic work. During lockdown, he completed his two-year master’s degree in International Business, Leadership and Management at the University of York.

Watmore had spoken previously of his desire to get back into the professional game, now that his studies are complete:

“It’s been a lot of hard work but really satisfying. It adds another string to my bow for later down the line.

“I feel as fit as I’ve ever felt. I have used this period to seriously step up my fitness game. My knee feels stronger than ever and I feel my body is in the best position it has been since before my injury.

“I genuinely believe that I’ve still got a lot left to give. I am excited to prove to people that I can get back to where I was before.”
