Pep Guardiola has outlined what Sergio Aguero needs to do to earn a new contract with Manchester City.

The City legend is in the last year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium, and a new contract is yet to be secured.

The Argentine to the City starting line-up on Saturday evening after four months out through injury.

Although he did not score and was substituted after 65 minutes, Guardiola believes that his side is much better with Aguero in it.

“We are better with him on the pitch. It is good news he is back,” said the Spaniard after their 1-0 win over Arsenal.

“It’s important Sergio comes back in condition, starts to get rhythm, avoids injuries and plays good.”

However, the City boss was keen to stress that he still has to earn a new deal to avoid being released at the end of this season.

He said: “We know what he means to us. We appreciate it.

“Now he has to show, like everyone of us and me first, that we deserve to continue here, playing good and winning games.

“After that, the club and myself, we decide.

“But we don’t have any doubts about his quality. He is a player to stay until he decides because he is unique, with his numbers.”

The 32-year-old has been a catalyst of the success that City enjoyed over the last decade. He is the club’s record goalscorer after registering 254 goals in 371 appearances.

Furthermore, the Argentine has been part of historic moments in the recent history of the club. It was his goal that led City to their third top-flight title in 2012; he also played a major part in their two most recent titles, scoring 62 goals across the two campaigns.
