Career So Far

23-year-old Awoniyi joined the Liverpool academy in 2015. The striker has previously enjoyed loaned spells in Germany, turning out for FSV Frankfurt in 2. Bundesliga and Mainz 05 in the top flight last season. He has registered two goals from 20 league appearances while in Germany but has also spent time on loan in other countries.

The forward joined N.E.C Nijmegan in Holland before signing for Royal Excel Mouscron in Belgium. He registered nine goals from 29 appearances in the Belgian First Division A before joining Gent, where he failed to score. He returned to Mouscron, adding 11 goals from 16 outings before teaming up with Mainz.

Despite being a natural number nine, the Nigerian can play in a number of attacking positions. As a result, he has been compared to Nigeria’s all-time top goalscorer, Rashidi Yekini.

What Was Said

Speaking to the clubs’ official website, Awoniyi said: “I’m looking forward to a new home and the task at 1. FC Union Berlin.

“Mainz was my second stop in Germany after Frankfurt and last year I was able to prove myself in the Bundesliga for the first time.

“At Union, I want to take the next steps, play as much as possible, develop and help the team to stay in the league.”

Oliver Ruhnert, Director for Professional Football at 1. FC Union Berlin, added: “Taiwo is a highly talented player who already knows the Bundesliga.

“He has already played in several countries and will certainly be settled in our team very quickly. With his physical robustness, his team spirit and work around the box.

“He should make our attacking game more flexible and further stimulate the attack.”

The striker watched on yesterday afternoon as Union lost on the opening day of the new Bundesliga season at home against FC Augsburg.
