Georginio Wijnaldum

Liverpool Hold Positive Talks With Georginio Wijnaldum

Georginio Wijnaldum: Top Target for Ronald Koeman

Ronald Koeman sees Wijnaldum as a massive part of the overhaul that is to come at Barcelona. His interest in the player goes as far back as when he managed the Dutch national team. They worked closely together then, with the squad in a similar situation to Barcelona now, with an overhaul also needed.

The Dutch international is definitely someone that is being looked at by Koeman. Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad has gone as far as saying that he is very high on Koeman’s wishlist.

A Dutch Reunion

Wijnaldum joining the club would not only mean a reunion with Koeman but also with Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong. Both players know each other well from playing with each other in the Dutch national squad, and impressive performances for them means that it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the two players link up the middle of the park for Barcelona.

Despite the overhaul, De Jong’s place looks safe as the controversial club president Josep Maria Bartomeu confirmed to Barca TV in August.

Talking about who is not for sell he mentioned De Jong’s name alongside, Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, Nelson Semedo, Clement Lenglet, Ousmane Dembele and Antoine Griezmann.

He also mentioned the name of Lionel Messi. However, things have changed since then, with Messi now wanting out of Barcelona, although it looks like he will have to see out his contract to do that.

Wijnaldum’s Contract to Expire Next Summer

The Dutchman now finds himself in the final year of his contract. Despite being an integral part in helping the club win the Premier League for the first time last season, talks are yet to begin on a new contract.

The player wants to stay at the club and hopes the meeting with Klopp will lead to a contract extension.
