Napoli President Tests Positive for Covid-19

Napoli president

Aurelio De Laurentiis, the Napoli president, has tested positive for Covid-19, the club have confirmed. He becomes the latest case around the footballing world to receive a positive test following several previous cases in La Liga and Ligue 1.

As we approach the new season, those in charge of making the decisions will be increasingly concerned about the number of positive cases in Europe’s top five leagues.

Last season was put on hold after just a couple of positive tests. Now, it could be time to question the season approaching and whether we need to wait a few more weeks before it commences.

A Growing Problem?

Laurentiis is not the first to have tested positive for Covid-19 in the footballing world upon returning, and he probably won’t be the last. Kylian Mbappe and Neymar have also tested positive with Mbappe’s test coming on a poorly timed international break.

The fact is, the recent international break for the Nations League has done more harm than good. It was completely unnecessary in the grand scheme of things. To allow teams to travel to away fixtures, in the current climate, was a bizarre decision.

League Season to Go Ahead as Planned?

It looks as though, despite the growing number of cases, the league season’s in Europe will go ahead as planned with the Premier League commencing on Saturday.

The Serie A is set to start again for the new season on September 19. De Laurentiis, the Napoli president, may be forced to miss this date due to the positive test.

As his side begin their campaign against Parma, he may have no choice but to watch from the comforts of his living room ahead of a hopeful season for Napoli.
