REPORT: Aston Villa Interested in Signing Sergio Romero From Manchester United

Sergio Romero

According to Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic, work is being done on a potential transfer for Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

Numerous clubs are reportedly interested in the player, who United have valued at £10 million. However, the report suggests that Aston Villa has shown the most interest.

Aston Villa Interested in Sergio Romero with Manchester United Exit Looking Likely

Limited Opportunities Next Season

Romero has been the understudy for David De Gea since joining the club in 2015. Most of his appearances for the club have come in cup competitions. However, opportunities next season might be further limited.

This is due to Dean Henderson‘s return from loan. The rumour heading into the new season is that the number one shirt is up for grabs, with both Henderson and De Gea fighting to get the starting shirt.

This was backed up when the Englishman was rewarded with a six-year contract in August worth £120,000 a week. This shows how high Manchester United see the goalkeeper, seeing him as a replacement for De Gea whenever that may be.

This also means that Romero will most likely drop down the pecking order to the third choice. Rather than keep him as the third choice, he is most likely to leave the club. This would probably suit all parties, with Romero still good enough to start in the Premier League.

Injury to Tom Heaton

The reason why Aston Villa might be in the market for a goalkeeper right now is because of a serious injury to first-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton. The goalkeeper hasn’t played for Villa since New Year’s Day when he ruptured his ACL against his former club, Burnley.

After the injury, Villa brought in Pepe Reina on loan to cover Heaton for the rest of last season. However, with Heaton likely to be out until October, Villa manager Dean Smith could use this opportunity to bring in a new first choice. If this is the case then Romero would most likely be near the top of the list.

Other Clubs Interested

Despite showing the most interest in the goalkeeper, Villa are not the only club interested in the player. ESPN have reported that both Everton and Leeds United have shown interest in the player.

The report goes on to say that Everton are interested in the player to give Jordan Pickford some competition, whilst Leeds are in the middle of signing players to prepare for life in the Premier League and Romero is being seen as a top signing for the side.
