REPORT: Leicester City to Sign Timothy Castagne

Leicester City are closing in on the signing of Atalanta right-back Timothy Castagne for a fee in the region of £22 million, as reported by Fabrizio Romano. The Belgian will arrive shortly after Ben Chilwell left the Foxes, and is expected to be his replacement, in a deal worth €25 million.

Castagne’s Versatility

Timothy Castagne played 33 games in all competitions last season. Castagne was predominantly played as a wide midfielder, on both the left and right side of the pitch. The 24-year-old also played a few games at left-back in the previous campaign. Although the Belgian’s main position is right-back, Castagne is seen as equally talented either side of the pitch.

The former Atalanta man is expected to join the side as their new left-back in place of recent Chelsea signing, Ben Chilwell. Although, with his ability to play various positions, Castagne could be deployed in other areas depending on the team Brendan Rodgers decides to pick.

Belgium International

In 2018, Castagne was given his international debut for Belgium in a friendly against Scotland were Belgium won 4-0. Since then, the right-back has gone on to make seven appearances, scoring two and assisting two, with his most recent appearance coming against Russia in a European qualifier at the end of 2019.

His Career so far

Timothy Castagne was at Atalanta for three years, and in the most recent campaign, helped them achieve a top-three finish, just six points behind champions Juventus. The full-back also helped his side reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League, losing to Paris Saint-Germain. Before excelling in Italy, Castagne had a successful time in his home country, playing for Genk. He appeared in 99 games for Genk over his three-year spell there and quickly became a first-team regular, racking up 49 appearances in his final season there before joining Atalanta.

What Leicester Fans Should Expect of the 24-year-old

Atalanta are known for their attacking style of play and, during his time there, Castagne has shown he isn’t afraid to get forwards from the full-back position, occasionally chipping in with a goal or an assist. As well as his attacking abilities, he has shown that he is good in the tackle and isn’t afraid to get physical with the opposition. At just 24-years-old, Brendan Rodgers has plenty of time to help develop him into the ideal player for him and the Leicester set up.
