Evans Looking to Continue Good Form Under Cocu

The 25-year-old penned a new deal with the Rams after an impressive second-half of the season. His contract at the club was due to expire next summer however he has now agreed on new terms.

Evans, who originally played as a central midfielder for the Rams shone at the heart of defence under Phillip Cocu last season. Injuries and a lack of cover in the defensive department saw him come into his own.

Despite a long injury lay-off himself last term, he made 20 appearances for Derby as they finished 10th.

Evans Solved Defensive Problem for Derby County Last Season

Evans was often picked ahead of centre-back Curtis Davies with the Dutchman keen to play out from the back. As a natural midfielder, Evans is confident on the ball but also a strong defender; able to win a header or make a tackle when required.

When Andre Wisdom was brutally attacked, suffering stab wounds and bringing his season to an abrupt halt – Evans was the man who came in. It’s likely that his versatility is a key reason for Cocu handing him a new deal.

The ex-England youth international has made 34 appearances during his two years with the Rams. He signed from Reading for a reported £1 million fee in 2018 but initially struggled to break into the side under Frank Lampard.

Stern Competition for Evans Next Season

Despite ending last season on a personal high, after a number of consistent performances, he may find it difficult to hold down a starting place this season.

The return of several defenders may push Evans down the pecking order. Matt Clarke has returned on loan for another season and Andre Wisdom is back to full fitness too.

What’s more, Cocu has bolstered his defence with Dutchman Mike te Wierik joining on a free transfer from FC Groningen.
