REPORT: Luton Town Target Ex-Manchester United Defender Demetri Mitchell

Former Manchester United left-back Demetri Mitchell has emerged as a target for Championship outfit, Luton Town, according to Simon Jones of Mail Online. The 23-year-old was released by United in June and is now looking for a club ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

Luton recently announced new deals for five players, who all played a pivotal role in surviving the Championship drop. The Hatters have also signed former Accrington Stanley winger Jordan Clark in pursuit of creating more goal-scoring opportunities. But the signing of Mitchell will look to resolve Luton’s defensive frailties that wounded the Town last season.

Huge Potential Held Back by Injuries

There is no doubt that Demetri Mitchell has the potential to play at the highest level. The former United star has been capped by England from U16 level right through to U20s.  Mitchell has also enjoyed success in Manchester United’s reserve team, winning the Reserve Team Player of the Year back in 2018.

He has since found it hard to progress and has experienced his fair share of injuries. Ahead of the 2017/18 campaign, Mitchell was loaned out to Heart of Midlothian. Fans were quick to take a liking to the Englishman. A couple of vital goals and impressive performances earned the respect of the Hearts faithful. A second spell at Hearts told a similar story. However, an injury in February ruled Mitchell out for the rest of the season.

Within a month of returning to training in September 2019, injuries once again fell Mitchell’s way.

Mitchell has now been fully fit since December and has seemingly put his injury woes behind him. He is now at a point in his career where game-time is an absolute necessity and given his huge potential, Luton may be tempted to take a punt.

Luton are in Need of Defensive-Minded Players

On numerous occasions last season, the Hatters could not field an out-and-out left back. The long-term injury to Brendan Galloway coupled with frequent knocks to Dan Potts often meant Luton had to adjust accordingly.

The Hatters have struggled to fill the void that James Justin and Jack Stacey left when they departed for the Premier League. Last season, Luton’s full-backs did not push forward half as much as the previously mentioned duo. So, a forward-thinking full-back will rank quite highly on Nathan Jones’s wish-list.

This is something that the 23-year-old can bring to Kenilworth Road. If he manages to stay fit, Luton could have an excellent player on their hands.
