Oliver Casey has penned a new deal at Leeds United that will see him stay at the club until 2023.

The defender is highly regarded at Elland Road by boss Marcelo Bielsa, who has included the 19-year old in a number of his matchday squads.

First-Team Debut

The Argentine manager has even handed the youngster his first-team debut for the club. Casey came on and featured in the club’s 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town back in December as a centre-half.

Although it was short-lived – he only featured for a total of six minutes – the experience is bound to have been a positive boost to the Englishman and a positive sign that he is doing all of the right things to eventually break into the team on a regular basis.

Performing Well for the U23 Side

The 19-year old continues though to perform well for Leeds’ U23 side. He featured 22 times for the club during the course of the current campaign and it looks like he will be continuing to develop and hone his skills at Elland Road for the foreseeable future

The centre-back was also awarded the club’s ‘Apprentice of the Year’ award back in 2019, after a superb season for the U18s.

Leeds are renowned for having a good standard of the academy, with recent graduates including Jamie Shackleton, Jack Clarke (who was snapped up by Tottenham Hotspur) and Ronaldo Vieira (now playing his football in Italy for Sampdoria) to name just three. It looks like Casey could be the next.

If his performances for the club’s U18 and U23 sides are anything to go by, then Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds do have a talent on their hands. He has continued to light up the Professional Development League and in the Premier League Cup and will continue to do so now until the summer of 2023.
