Coventry City Complete Signing of Julien Dacosta

Coventry City continue to build for their return to the Championship and have made their second signing of the summer by bringing in defender Julien Dacosta. The Frenchman joins the Sky Blues of a free transfer following the expiry of his contract at Ligue 2 side FC Chamois Niort.

What Was Said?

Speaking to the club website about his move, manager Mark Robins said: “We’re very pleased to welcome Julien to the Club.

“He’s a pacy and powerful defender, who also brings attacking attributes to the side. Predominantly a right-back, Julien is versatile and can also play left-back too.

“Julien is a player we’ve been monitoring for some time now and has been linked with other sides as well, so we’re pleased to secure his signature and we’re looking forward to working with him.”

Career So Far

Twenty-four-year-old Dacosta was born in Marseille and came through the youth ranks at his local club. He made 46 appearances for Marseille’s second team, scoring once. He never broke through to the first team and instead joined Chamois Niort in 2017.

In three seasons in the second division of French football, he made a total of 75 league appearances, which goes up to 83 with cup fixtures included. He never found the net for Chamois but proved to be a solid fixture in their backline, despite them coming close to relegation this season.

Second Addition

Dacosta becomes Coventry’s second addition from Europe this summer following the arrival of Gustavo Hamer from Dutch side PEC Zwolle.

The 2020/21 season will be Coventry’s first in the Championship since 2011/12. Seven of their seasons away have been spent in League One, while they even dipped as far as League Two in 2017/18, but won the play-offs to secure an immediate return.

It’s been a difficult decade for the Sky Blues, with their financial problems and having to ground share twice, but returning to the second division and being able to tempt signings from abroad is a positive step.
