Basement Battle at Kenilworth Road Between Luton Town and Barnsley

Luton Town Barnsley

Luton Town welcome Barnsley to Kenilworth Road in the Championship, in what is a game between the league’s basement sides.

Match Preview: Luton Town v Barnsley

It had been a promising start in Nathan Jones’ second term. They snatched a late equaliser at home to Preston North End, won away at Swansea City, and also put up a heroic display at Leeds United where they took a point back to Bedfordshire.

But their unbeaten league run came crashing to an end on Saturday. Yakou Meite’s four goals helped Reading to a 5-0 win leaving the Hatters five points adrift from safety.

But Luton have somewhat of a positive run in. Following their game against Barnsley, they also take on relegation rivals, and fellow Yorkshire opponents, Huddersfield Town and Hull City.

These final few fixtures gives Luton Town, a real good opportunity to beat the drop. But if they are to avoid relegation to League One, they must start putting things right.

Barnsley had also been on a great run of form too. They had picked up seven points from a possible nine, which included a win away at QPR, and also a 2-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers.

But like their opponents, they also suffured a heavy defeat on Saturday. A 4-0 loss at relegation rivals Stoke City, meant they were unable to move closer to safety.

With Leeds, Nottingham Forest and Brentford all to come in their final three games, it is looking bleak for Gerhard Struber’s men.

Match Facts

Cauley Woodrow and Conor Chaplin are Barnsley’s top goalscorer this season. (Woodrow has 14 and Chaplin, 12). But the forwards have not scored since the middle of February, and will be hoping to break their duck at Kenilworth Road.

Luton Town came out on top in the reverse fixture. They won 3-1 at Oakwell with all Luton’s goals coming in the first half-hour.

Both teams come into this one with no injuries.

Prediction

This match is arguably Luton and Barnsley’s most important match of the season. With Middlesbrough and Hull playing the following, it gives both of these sides the chance to put the pressure on.

Neither side can afford to drop points in this one. But I feel this one maybe heading for a draw.
