Bristol City Announce Bailey Wright Will Leave the Club Following Contract Expiry

Robins Career Consisted of Many Happy Days

The Australian international’s three-year spell with the Robins comes after making 83 appearances.

Having joined from Preston North End in January 2017, Wright became club captain but has now become a free agent following the expiration of his contract.

Wright immediately took a leadership role with City but has had him playing time limited due to injuries.

He joined Sunderland on-loan for the second half of this season.

Bristol City manager Lee Johnson has fond memories with Wright and described him as a “good individual”.

“We’ve all been honoured to have such a great individual as well as a quality footballer at Bristol City.” Johnson said.

“He has been a good influence and a role model and I cannot speak highly enough of him. We wish him all the best in his future career.”

Bailey Wright took a wage deferral when finances were hit due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking about his time with the Robins, the 27-year-old said: “It’s been an honour to play at Bristol City and I’ve been fortunate enough to enjoy some good times with some great people.

“It’s always emotional when you leave a club but I want to thank everyone – players, staff and fans, who’ve been brilliant.”

He added: “It’s been a pleasure to see the club’s ambition grow and grow and I am excited for the club’s future and also my own.”

Youngsters Let Go by Robins, Walsh Among Those Whose Deals Extended

The Robins have also allowed several youngsters to depart the club on free transfers.

James Burford, Ricardo Rees, Aaron Sainsbury, Marcus Day and Harvey Smith are all to depart.

Similarly, second-year scholars Jago Lott, Max Williams, Jamie Taylor and Will Gould will leave the Robins.

Bristol City have exercised the option to extend Liam Walsh’s current deal by one year.

Walsh, who was on-loan with Coventry City, played a crucial part in the Sky Blues’ promotion to the Championship.

He also won Coventry City’s Players’ Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year; Niclas Eliasson and George Nurse have also had their deals extended.
