Wigan Athletic Provide Update on Player Contracts

Championship club Wigan Athletic have provided an update on their contract situation. Five players have agreed short-term extensions until the end of the season, one has signed a short-term permanent deal and another has agreed a new one-year contract.

Balogun Joins Permanently

Defender Leon Balogun has signed a short-term permanent deal with the club. The Nigeria international joined on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion in January having failed to force himself into the Seagulls side.

His contract at Wigan will run until the end of the 2019/20 season.

Extended Loans a New Contract

Everton loanee Kieran Dowell has seen his deal extended until the end of the season. Alex Dobre’s loan from Bournemouth will also continue until the end.

In addition to the loanees extending, striker Joe Garner has signed a new one-year deal with the club. The 32-year-old joined from Ipswich Town in 2018 after a spell at Rangers. His most prolific run came before that at Preston North End, where he scored 49 goals in three seasons.

Extended Contracts

Five current Wigan players will see out the campaign at the club after agreeing short-term extensions.

Danny Fox, who joined from Nottingham Forest last season, will be staying on along with former Cardiff City man Anthony Pilkington.

Lewis Macleod, Gary Roberts and Michael Jacobs will also see out the 2019/20 season with the Latics.

Negotiations

The club say they are currently in discussions with defender Chey Dunkley over a new deal at the DW Stadium.

They are also in contact with Brighton about extending the loan deal of Jan Mlakar until the end of this season.

Finally, the loan deal for defender Dujon Sterling has expired and he will return to Premier League side Chelsea.
