Gaetano Berardi Commits to Leeds United as Five Extend Contracts

The Whites have tied down a number of key players until the end of the season.

With the Yorkshire outfit currently sitting top of the Championship table, boss Marcelo Bielsa has moved to extend five Whites’ stays at Elland Road until the end of the 2019-20 season.

Gaetano Berardi has extended his permanent contract until the end of the current year.

The full-back’s contract was set to run out later this month but Leeds have tied down an established player ahead of their promotion run-in.

On-loan trio Jack Harrison, Illan Meslier and Ben White have also extended their temporary contracts.

Winger Helder Costa will also remain at Elland Road until the end of the season.

Jean-Kevin Augustin, on-loan from RB Leipzig, is the only Leeds United loanee not to be included in those given extended contracts.

The forward joined from German side Leipzig in January but has managed just 49 minutes for the Whites due to fitness concerns.

He is not due to feature against Cardiff City on Sunday, Leeds’ first fixture for three months due to coronavirus, and the Whites are yet to make a decision on his future.

Ahead of Sunday’s trip to Wales, chief Bielsa said: “Jean-Kevin Augustin is not injured from April, but he is doing individual work.”

Leeds are in the middle of a promotion fight, hoping to end a 15-year spell away from the top-flight.

Bielsa’s side are one point ahead of second-placed West Bromwich Albion, and seven clear of third.

After a three-month break, and with just nine matches to go, the Whites seem to be within touching distance of a return to the Premier League.
