REPORT: Timo Werner Close to Chelsea Move

Timo Werner

Timo Werner has been the subject of transfer speculation for what seems like an eternity now. The German has constantly been linked with moves to both Liverpool and Chelsea with Liverpool supposedly the prefered destination between the two.

In recent interviews, Werner stated his desire to work under Jurgen Klopp; meetings were also reportedly held between the two where discussions were positive, everything was pointing towards a move to Merseyside. But, as we enter the final days before the expiration of Werner’s buyout clause, the tables have reportedly turned.

Christian Falk of SportBild took to Twitter to announce that the Leipzig forward could sign a contract with Chelsea until 2025, collecting more than €10 million per year in a deal worth up to €60 million.

A Huge Blow for Liverpool

A few weeks ago, it seemed as though the transfer of Werner to Liverpool was a certain one. The 24-year-old was expected to join forces with the famous Liverpool attacking trio to form an unstoppable offensive force. So, in the space of a few weeks, what went wrong?

If Jurgen Klopp had it his way, Werner would probably be on his way to Merseyside as we speak. But, the fact is, a Premier League team is as much as business as it is a football team. And Jurgen Klopp takes charge of the football part. Meanwhile, Fenway Sports Group takes charge of the business side of things, including how and when their money is spent.

On many occasions, Klopp and co have been granted their wish of new arrivals. On this occasion, however, the owners are simply not willing to splash the cash amid the Coronavirus crisis; they are not willing to invest in a market that could well be about to crash, especially when considering the Liverpool squad is in no need of extra talent to hit their current targets. There will come a time for investment, but it seems as though now is not that time.

A Big Statement From Chelsea

From out of nowhere, Chelsea have overtaken Liverpool in a race that looked impossible to win at one point. At the start of the season, many doubted Frank Lampard and believed his side wouldn’t even reach the top four; they now sit fourth with nine games to play. And, with Hakim Ziyech already on his way, by securing the signature Werner, Chelsea would be issuing a clear statement of intent for further success next season.

The deal, however, is yet to be confirmed, leaving much to still be decided. The way this is going, expect many more twists and turns as Werner prepares to take either London or Merseyside by storm in the summer.
