Who Could Be the Manchester United Goalkeeper Next Season?

Manchester United goalkeepers

Manchester United have always held pride in having some of the best goalkeepers in the world. From Peter Schmeichel to Edwin van der Sar, and now David de Gea. There have been true legends to play between the sticks at Old Trafford, but there is controversy over who will fill the position in 2020/2021. Dean Henderson is likely to return to the team from two fruitful years on loan with Sheffield United. His impeccable form stands him in good stead to be considered against De Gea for the Manchester United goalkeeper next season.

This Campaign

This campaign, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s choice for in goal has been invariable to previous seasons. David de Gea is the first-choice in the Premier League, while Sergio Romero plays the vast majority of cup competitions. While the latter has been characteristically impressive, the former has struggled to live up to his previous standards.

Since a highly disappointing 2018 World Cup, De Gea has not been the same. He has been far more prone to mistakes, and has not pulled out heroic saves as frequently as he used to. This season, calling upon the goalkeeper has become far less necessary with the additions of Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka to United’s defence. The Spanish goalkeeper has still shown his ability on many occasions, but he has not played with the same panache that earned him consideration as the world’s best goalkeeper just a few years ago.

Next season, the goalkeeping position will not be as clear cut as previous campaigns. While De Gea used to be the first name on the team sheet, Henderson could return from his loan in fantastic form and take over from the Spaniard. Meanwhile, Romero has been an excellent keeper over the past few years, and would be a viable option to start in the English top flight.

Overall, Manchester United have three goalkeepers who could be their first-choice. David de Gea seems to be the most likely option, with experience and undoubted quality, while Henderson could go out for one more loan season and Romero remains as the cup competition keeper. After that, however, it is anyone’s guess as to who will end up goalkeeping for the Red Devils.
