The Georginio Wijnaldum Contract Situation and Why it Must be a Priority for Liverpool

During his time at Liverpool, Georginio Wijnaldum has slowly but surely transformed into an important player for the Reds, scoring the biggest of goals on the biggest of occasions. And, now with just one year left on his contract, Liverpool must act quickly and make the Dutchman’s renewal a top priority.

To lose a player of Wijnaldum’s ability for a cut-price could be catastrophic when considering the departure of Adam Lallana in the summer and the injury-prone nature of Naby Keita. Without their midfield utility man, Liverpool could be left with a worrying lack of depth on the midfield front.

A Situation That Could Impact the Reds’ Rise to the Top

Failure to resolve this situation will not only damage Liverpool on the pitch but also off it. Wijnaldum’s exit, or constant rumour of an exit, could unsettle the Liverpool squad and the usually happy mood around Melwood. If the Dutchman was to depart next summer, other players may also feel as though the grass is greener elsewhere, creating a damaging knock-on effect for Liverpool. This is one of many reasons why a new contract for Gini Wijnaldum as soon as possible should be made a top priority this summer.

The Grass Isn’t Always Greener

Gini Wijnaldum, however, won’t be in a rush to leave Liverpool after seeing other players try and fail to replicate their form at another club. Both Emre Can and Philippe Coutinho swapped Liverpool for another European giant in 2018, before failing to live up to expectations. Can’s case, in particular, is a situation Liverpool will want to avoid replicating in the case of Wijnaldum. The German failed to sign a new contract and therefore left on a free deal to Juventus.

Wijnaldum is Settled at Liverpool

Wijnaldum has been at Liverpool long enough now to get to know the city and settle with his family, so suddenly uprooting them to swap the European Champions for another club could seem pointless. At this point, it seems as though the Dutchman is simply waiting for an offer from Liverpool, an offer that he will accept to remain a key player for the Reds. And after welcoming a newborn son into the world last week, the former Newcastle United man will not want to make any needless changes to family life.

The renewal of Gini Wijnaldum’s contract must be made a priority as Liverpool look to avoid a replication of the Emre Can situation.
