Championship side Cardiff City have become the latest club to agree pay deferrals with their players owing to the Coronavirus pandemic. All first-team players will take a partial deferral for three months to help with the club’s finances while football is suspended.

Constructive Talks

The club said in a statement that they held constructive talks with the players over the idea of taking a pay deferral. They also confirmed that it had been done “with the greatest of will” by the first-team squad.

Club CEO Ken Choo continued: “I’m pleased that our players have come together with us to make this significant financial gesture in support of our club and owner.

“We have a tightly-knit community within the club between our non-playing staff and players; this personal connection compelled our players to step forward and do what they have done, and I’d like to say how proud of them I am for doing this.

“We look forward to returning to the normality of sport in the not too distant future but, until then, will continue to do all we can to protect the infrastructure of our club and community.”

Choo, as well as manager Neil Harris, have already taken pay cuts due to the pandemic.

Bristol City Also Agree Deferrals

Cardiff’s cross-border rivals Bristol City have come to the same agreement with their players, too.

Like the Bluebirds, they will also look to put some of the non-playing staff on furlough leave in a further effort to save money.

Chief executive Mark Ashton said: “Lee [Johnson, Bristol City head coach] and I have spoken to every player and also to many staff affected and we have been impressed with how understanding they have been and the recognition that we are all in this difficult situation together.

“Without doubt, next season will be one of austerity for everyone but I believe Bristol City’s principles of sustainability through prudent financial management will see us through.”
