Talks Underway

Spurs could be attempting to solve their defensive issues at right back, by expressing their interest in 28-year-old Meunier. French outlet L’Equipe claim that talks between Spurs and the player progressed over the last few days, in a bid to secure the Belgian on a free transfer in the summer.

The report also suggests that Meunier would prefer to extend his four-year stay at Paris Saint-Germain. However the Belgian is reportedly out-of-favour with manager Thomas Tuchel. The Ligue 1 leaders have not made an attempt to renew Meunier’s current deal; Tuchel is reportedly looking to bring in a new right back in place of the Belgian.

Wealth of Experience

The sale of Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid last summer had left the club short in the right back spot. Serge Aurier has proved to be inconsistent in an already-frail defence. 22-year-old Kyle Walker-Peters lacks experience; he looked out-of-his depth when given the opportunity to prove himself. A bright spot in Japhet Tanganga emerged midway through the season. But, he remains to be a raw talent who will need to be managed carefully.

Should Spurs be able to secure the services of Meunier on a free transfer, the Belgian will bring a healthy amount of experience to North London. Meunier has won two league titles during his time with Paris Saint-Germain, so the winning mentality will undoubtedly be instilled. On an international level he has won 40 caps for Belgium, and in the process helping them reach the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2018.

A defender of Meunier’s calibre potentially being available on a free transfer will undoubtedly attract interest from a host of European clubs. Spurs will have to fend that interest off quickly, to ensure they bring the defender’s services to North London.
