Audacious Swap Deal

Barcelona are proposing an audacious swap deal for the Portuguese right-back.

According to The Telegraph, the Catalan giants are set to offer Nelson Semedo in return for Cancelo.

Cancelo has failed to impress during his debut season for Manchester City. Having made the move to the Etihad last summer, the 25-year-old has made just 11 appearances in the Premier League.

The majority of his appearances have come in cup competitions, where he has failed to live up to expectation. As a result, Pep Guardiola is looking to move him on after just one season.

Barcelona, therefore, are preparing a swap deal involving fellow Portuguese defender Semedo.

Semedo, unlike his City counterpart, is the first-choice right-back at the Camp Nou. He has made 29 appearances in all competitions so far this season, including 21 in La Liga.

The 26-year-old has been a regular in the Barcelona side since joining on a five-year deal in 2017. He has made 111 appearances so far in his career with the Catalan club, 46 of which came last season.

Swap Deals to Become More Prominent?

As a way of battling against the financial struggles of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, swap deals could become more prominent in the next transfer window.

The Telegraph reports suggests that clubs are keen to explore this avenue as wages would be the only financial cost to such deals.

Players moving for high figures is unlikely in the next summer transfer window due to the financial implications of the virus. Several Premier League clubs have introduced cost-cutting measures.

Tottenham and Newcastle United have both placed staff on furlough leave, while Southampton players have taken a wage cut to help the club off the pitch.
