Norwich City have become the latest club to start furloughing staff members due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Tottenham Hotspur announced earlier today that they would be beginning this process, and the Canaries have now joined them.

Spurs and Newcastle United are the most high-profile teams to have begun this process at the moment. Many teams in the EFL have also placed staff, predominantly non-playing, on furlough leave to help alleviate costs throughout the Coronavirus pandemic.
Furlough leave allows those staff members to still received 80% of their usual salaries under the government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, up to £2,500, while they are not required to work throughout this period.
The club said: “The club will top up the money received from the scheme to ensure that all furloughed staff receive their usual salary in full.
“As part of the scheme, furloughed staff will not be permitted to carry out work for the club.
“The club will continue to monitor and review the situation as it develops.”
Norwich currently sit bottom of the Premier League table, four points behind 19th-placed Aston Villa and six points from escaping the relegation zone.
Not All Clubs Following Suit
While this scheme is being utilised by some clubs, others are not following suit.
Crystal Palace have confirmed that their will to pay all of the staff on their payroll, while Brighton & Hove Albion have confirmed that they will do the same.
The spread of Coronavirus is not just affecting football in the UK. European giants such as Barcelona and Bayern Munich have also announced plans on how to reduce their costs.
